EXHIBITION: June 26th -August 7th, weekdays 9:00-5:00pm

WHERE: Charleston Civic Design Center, 85 Calhoun Street

ADMISSION: Free

The Civic Action Exhibition is a showcase of local grassroots organizations and the work they are doing to improve Charleston. For the exhibition the Charleston Civic Design Center gathered a variety of different organizations to demonstrate how the work of each of the organizations contributes to a larger action that is
changing our city for the better.

The exhibition was centered around a simple question put to each or the organizations. “What is the most promising opportunity to improve our community, and what action will your organization take to make a difference.”

We hope that you will join us June 25th for the opening, when each organization will answer this question two ways. Starting at 6:30pm each organization will give a short five minute speech addressing the question, and they will also all reveal the showcase pieces they designed which will be displayed in the CCDC’s gallery space for the remainder of the exhibition.

Exhibition Features:
Architecture for Humanity
Charleston Holy City Bike Co-op
Charleston Arts Coalition
Louie’s Kids
Charleston Horticultural Society
Lowcountry Earth Force
Charleston Miracle League
Pecha Kucha Charleston

Atlantic Green Conference features Mixson in its tour of LEED projects

June 19, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The Sustainability Institute’s Atlantic Green Conference starts today, June 19, and while tickets to the conference are sold out, you can still get in on some of their tours – including the Green Residential Tour, featuring Mixson, Hunley Waters, and Oak Terrace Preserve. The tour runs on Saturday, June 20 from 12-2 and tickets for the general public are $15.

The Atlantic Green Conference brings together experts from a multitude of green building backgrounds: solar energy, jobsite deconstruction, LEED documentation, greening historic buildings, green roofs, and countless others. The conference is being held, appropriately, at 10 Storehouse Row, in the Navy Yard in North Charleston.

The Navy Yard is a high-density, mixed-use center in the heart of Noisette, North Charleston’s master-planned sustainable city-within-a-city. North Charleston is well on its way to becoming one of the nation’s most sustainable cities, as projects like Noisette and Mixson testify.

How to Start a Successful Blog?

June 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment

One of the first questions that I get when talking to my potential Stylee PR clients is: “How do I start a blog?” According to a recent study from Hubspot, who canvassed 167 small to medium sized business owners and executives, one of the most effective marketing practices includes a successful blog.

Starting a blog is very simple and it is also free, you do not need to buy a domain, just simply pick your blog name on one of the popular blog hosting sites like blogger or wordpress.  Here are five tips to get you started on the road to creating a successful blog.

1. Create great content – this is the most important thing you can do. Great content is what attracts users, and keeps them coming back. A blog with great content is also more likely to be discovered in search engines.

2. Pick a niche – picking a certain topic to blog on will ultimately be better for your blog in the end. It brings targeted readers are more likely to spend more time on your site and more likely to come back. If you advertise on your blog, targeting specific users will benefit you.

3. Don’t advertise too much - while advertising can be profitable for you, too much advertising can drive many readers away from your blog. Advertise, but don’t overdo it.

4. Create a schedule – posting on a schedule is good for two reasons. First, your readers know that you will be posting new content regularly. Secondly, it helps you stay committed and motivated in what you are doing.

5. Experiment - and have fun with it. It is your blog, it does not belong to someone else. You are free to do whatever you want with it. Don’t be afraid to try new things. There is no specific approach to blogging. What works for someone else may not work for you.

Cinebarre on Location – Modern Drive-in Movie Theater in Charleston, SC

June 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Since its opening last year, Mount Pleasant’s Cinebarre has been the perfect place for a date night for those wanting to catch a new movie and enjoy a beer or two. And those that prefer to eat their dinner while watching a movie, not before or after. I enjoy date nights at Cinebarre because of the intimate setting as this dinner and a movie cinema features much smaller theaters. Plus I love their chocolate cake!

The company that opened its first movie theater in Asheville, NC, now has 4 locations, offering a bar-style menu and wine and beer. Cinebarre is also available for special events. The company’s new service, Cinebarre On Location, is launching this month and taking movies to you.

Cinebarre On Location will show movies outside in different locations, accommodating up to 2000 people. All-you-can-eat menu will be themed to the movie being shown, beer wagons will accompany the food and DJs or live music will entertain for two hours before showtime. Cinebarre on Location is the modern drive-in, people will not watch the movies from their cars, but bring their chairs and blankets. The company is promising an awesome sound quality incl. surround sound. The actual screen is bigger than the one they use at Mt. Pleasant location. Here is a list of scheduled Midnight Special shows: Public Enemies on June 30; Bruno on July 9; Harry Potter and the Half- Blood Price on July 14; G.I.Joe the Rise of Cobra on August 6, and more to be announced!

Cinebarre On Location MIDNIGHT SPECIAL is a special subset of On Location at which the most anticipated movies are premiered at midnight the night before their release date.  This gives you the chance to see the hottest new movie before anyone else gets to see it.  And not only that, but YOU will get to see it on the biggest screen imaginable…OUTSIDE at Cinebarre. Tickets are only pre-sold online at fandango.com or cinebarre.com.

Back by popular demand, Pecha Kucha Night Charleston Volume 3 (PKN3) presented by South Carolina’s Council on Competitiveness will take place on June 3, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. on a lawn behind the Civic Design Center, 85 Calhoun Street, downtown Charleston, SC. PKN3 will bring creative minds together for an evening of short presentations that reveal presenters’ passions and inspirations. Tickets are limited, admission is $5. Bring your chairs and blankets. Pizza and non-alcoholic beverages will be for sale.

I got a chance to taste the amazing food creations from Iverson Catering at the Spoleto Scene party and I cannot wait to see Iverson’s presentation! Poet and editor of the Post and Courier’s Preview, Marcus Amaker, who is also a board member of the Charleston Arts Coalition, will host the event.

Pecha Kucha Night (Japanese for the sound of conversation), founded in Tokyo and now presented in over 135 cities around the globe, was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network and show their work in public. Each speaker is allotted 20 slides for 20 seconds each for a six-minute and 40-second presentation. Pecha Kucha Night Charleston so far included presentations from creative professionals in fields encompassing culinary arts, graphic design, architecture, urban planning, graphic and fashion design, photography, and the performing arts.
