In order to use the $8,000 first-time homebuyers tax credit, first-time homebuyers have to close on their house by November 30, 2009. Due to an overwhelming response to its first workshop held this May, The Homeownership Resource Center, a division of Family Services will present a First-Time Homebuyer Workshop on Saturday, August 29, from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Wachovia Auditorium located at the College of Charleston.
The Homeownership Resource Center, a HUD approved counseling agency, will provide experienced and knowledgeable counselors who will assist workshop attendees with key steps of the home buying process -focusing on topics such as mortgage applications, fees, and budgeting, current market conditions, qualifying for the new $8,000 tax credit for first time homebuyers, buying HUD properties and foreclosures, home inspections and the closing. Homebuyers that qualify and purchase a home before December 1, 2009, could receive up to the full $8,000 tax credit, which they don’t have to repay. The only repayment requirement is if the homeowner sells the home within three years after the purchase. In addition, the all time low interest rates for qualified buyers can make home ownership cost lower than an average rent in our area.
To sign up for the workshop, visit www.fsisc.org or call 843-735-7862. This free class includes lunch and is open to the public. The College of Charleston’s Wachovia Auditorium in the Beatty Center is located at 5 Liberty St., Charleston.

In a speech this week HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan announced that the Federal Housing Administration came up with a way to allow first time homebuyers to use the $8,000 first time home buyer tax credit as a down payment at the time of purchasing a home. The new $8,000 tax credit for qualified first time homebuyers and other recent changes in legislation have enormous implications for the housing market and present many opportunities for first time homebuyers. They will no longer have to wait until the following year and their tax refund to get the money. However, the home buying process can be extremely confusing even for experienced home buyers. Knowledgeable counselors and industry experts will discuss key steps of the home buying process – focusing on topics such as mortgage applications, fees, and budgeting, current market conditions, qualifying for the new $8,000 tax credit for first time homebuyers, buying HUD properties and foreclosures, home inspections and the closing.

One local real estate company’s ad campaign — encouraging homebuyers to “break up” with their agents — has stirred up so much controversy that the broker in charge is canceling it.
Steve deGuzman, owner of the Rehava Real Estate Store that opened last summer in North Charleston, says he has done nothing wrong. Still, deGuzman said he will halt the campaign out of “professional courtesy.”
Some billboards have already come down, and deGuzman said the advertisements posted on the stall doors of dozens of public restrooms will disappear soon. He also plans to take down the campaign’s accompanying Web site, www.breakupwithyouragent.com.
Once in a while, a marketing campaign comes along that makes everyone buzz with curiosity and excitement. Such a campaign hit Charleston, South Carolina, on January 1, 2009, when the city got flooded with mysterious dollar billboards. Speculations started immediately. Who is behind the dollar billboard campaign; is it McDonald’s Dollar Menu or maybe Geico? Many guesses were off, yet some guessed correctly. The clever campaign was introduced by rēhava-real estate store that is slashing its commission in half, rewarding its buyers by giving 50% of its commission back at closing. Rehava has already rewarded $80,000 in rewards.
Rēhava distinguishes itself from a standard real estate firm by using the most effective technology available, especially Web 2.0. In June 2008, the company embraced the inevitable changes happening in the real estate industry and introduced a new and innovative real estate model that rewards clients. The company is reinventing the real estate industry. Rehava’s revolutionary real estate concept is timelier now than it has ever been. Those who understand how real estate transactions work can see that their concept is a radical move towards putting clients first and giving them the most that a real estate agency can offer.
