esalen-drummers-low-resThe Charleston Arts Coalition, a cross-disciplinary coalition of voices aspiring to unite Charleston’s creative community, will début in its first public appearance on Friday, February 20, 2009 at a Coalition Carnival: It’s a Bloco!  Festivities start at 6:00p.m. at the City Gallery at the WaterfrontPark. The first coalition event is themed around the legendary Brazilian carnival featuring art, samba imagery, a taste of Brazilian food, a brief Capoeira dance presentation by Capoeira Performance Arts as well as music by Duda Lucena & Friends. “Bloco is a celebration of the people. It is an opportunity for everyone to join together dancing, drumming, singing and parading as one unified community,” says Duda Anderson, native from Rio de Janiero. Capoeira is a uniquely Brazilian folk dance, an art form that combines fight, dance, rhythm and movement. Samba is a Brazilian musical genre derived from African and European roots, which is recognized worldwide as a symbol of Brazil
